Guide to Austin, Texas

Keep Austin Weird

Austin, Texas is one of my favorite cities ever. I like it because of the abundance of outdoor activities, the friendly people, the stellar restaurants, the live music, and just the vibes. It’s an all-around “cool” spot. It’s also one of the few cities that I could see myself living in other than Winter Park. Being a super active person, I appreciate the city because there is SO much to do. Bike rentals are everywhere and there are tons of walking trails to just explore and appreciate the surroundings. I could go on and on. It’s awesome.

For those of you looking to make your way to the “weirdest” city in the U.S., here are some of my favorite spots to check out!

Austin Capitol

Lady Bird Lake – Go paddle boarding or kayaking! There are tons of rentals all along the lake.

Zilker Park – Grab a to-go lunch from the first Whole Foods and have a picnic in the park. It’s a great place to run around and people watch too.

South Congress a.k.a. “SoCo” – Such an awesome area. You can easily spend all day walking up and down the street and checking things out. There are tons of awesome restaurants, coffee, bars, and shopping. This is also where the famous “i love you so much” mural is, so definitely gotta make it here for the photo opportunity.

TOMS Austin – I love TOMs shoes, and they have a flagship store in Austin! The shop is on South Congress with a great front porch and a cute coffee shop inside.

Bouldin Creek Cafe – All time favorite. It’s a vegetarian spot that doesn’t take reservations, but is worth whatever wait you may find. They have the best black bean cakes, corn bread, teas, salads, vegetables, eggs… etc.

Perla’s – Best seafood! Sit on the patio if you can. Definitely get some oysters and come for dinner and brunch.

Launderette – This is an awesome date night spot. It’s an old laundromat turned farm-to-table restaurant. Greg and I shared a bunch of small plates and ate everything! They have a ton of interesting vegetable dishes.

Clark’s Oyster Bar – Another perfect date night spot (kinda pricey, but worth it). We celebrated our wedding anniversary here and had the best experience. Unable to get reservations, we walked in on the earlier side and grabbed a seat at the bar. They have a great happy hour with discounts on wine and apps. Start your meal with oysters and end with one of their desserts. Everything is super.

True Food Kitchen – This is a chain, but it definitely doesn’t feel like one. Their foods are mostly organic, fresh, and amazing.

Elizabeth’s Street Cafe – I actually haven’t made it, but go here. I’ve heard it is delicious.

Go out on Rainey Street for awesome bars and live music. One of my favorite restaurants is NO VA Kitchen & Bar. I recommend hitting this place up for dinner and then bar hopping until you’ve had enough.

Lucille – they have an awesome hang out area and killer craft cocktails.

Icenhauers – Another spot with great music and craft cocktails. The images above were taken there. This was a delicious tequila drink with line, mint, coconut, and other goodies.

Dirty Six – If you are looking to get real crazy, head to Sixth Street. This is where you will find tons of raging college kids, cheaper drinks, dancing, etc. Definitely go here if you are a bachelorette or celebrating something.

Jo’s Coffee – Good coffee. Free wifi.

Houndstooth Coffee – Free wifi. Great branding.
